Championship clubs with players at EURO 2024 will receive compensation as a result of their participation.

Several teams that competed in the 2023/24 EFL Championship are in line to receive a payment from UEFA because of EURO 2024.

UEFA has a club compensation scheme pot which is worth £118m that will be paid out to teams with players at Europe's summer tournament. Okay Yokuslu is representing Turkey, for example, and as a result of his call-up, the Baggies will receive some money - even if he does not make an appearance.

The payment scheme is called the Club Benefits Programme and the European governing body compensates clubs based on how long they spend with their national team. It is not a new thing, with the strategy running in other major tournaments, too, while FIFA had something similar for the 2022 World Cup.

UEFA revealed there would be a €10m increase from the amount shared at EURO 2020 which was played in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount secured for the release of players to the Euro 2024 final tournament will be increased from €130m to €140m. That translates to about £118m in total being dished out to clubs around the world whose players are heading to Germany.

It works out at around £140,000 per player for the duration of the group stage and so, as a result, West Brom will receive that figure at least for Yokuslu's participation. Turkey get their campaign under way on Tuesday against Georgia and also face Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and Czechia.

Andi Weimann, who joined the Baggies in the January transfer window, is also at the tournament with Austria. But there will be no monies for his involvement as his switch to the Hawthorsn was on loan.

If Turkey make it past the group stage then West Brom would earn extra money. His continued participation in the tournament would mean he would miss the start of pre-season, but international players are expected to receive some rest to avoid burnout after a long season which has extended in to the summer.

In the build-up to EURO 2024, Yokuslu played 29 minutes in a 2-1 friendly defeat to Poland after being an unused substitute against holders Italy. He has been capped 40 times for Turkey and could at least hope for a substitute appearance during the tournmanet. But even if he doesn’t appear, West Brom will still net a six-figure fee.

Other Championship clubs such as Norwich City and Watford have players competing at EURO 2024 and they, too, receive payment. Watford will get £280,000 for Giorgi Chakvetadze's involvement with Georgia, while Ryan Porteous - who was sent off in Scotland's 5-1 defeat to Germany - will still earn the Hornets some money. Norwich City will earn at least £420,000 because of Angus Gunn, Grant Hanley and Kenny McLean all being in Germany with the Scots.
