Birmingham City could reignite their January transfer interest in a Liverpool midfielder.

Birmingham City have the opportunity to sign one of their reported January transfer targets on a free transfer this summer.

Liverpool have confirmed Mateusz Musialowski - once dubbed the Polish Messi - will leave Anfield after his contract wasn't renewed. The Daily Mail said that Musialowski was a target for Blues in January along with a host of other teams.

Musialowski was meant to join Austrian side TSV Hartberg last summer but remained on Merseyside after a deal fell through at the last minute. The 20-year-old is in charge of his own destiny and could have a handful of teams to choose from including some in his native Poland.

In his four years spent at Liverpool he made one senior appearance. Musialowski came on as a substitute in a 6-1 win in Liverpool's Europa League campaign.

He was a key player for the Reds' youth team and across 82 appearances for the under-18, youth and under-23s team he registered 30 goals and six assists. Musialowski - predominantly a left-sided winger - has also been capped five times for the Poland under-21 national team with one goal scored.

Birmingham ended up signing Alex Pritchard, Andre Dozzell and Paik seung-ho in the January window with there being no room for Musialowski. He was a player on the radar of Tony Mowbray but he has since moved on and the next manager might have different transfer targets in mind.

Liverpool also confirmed that Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne and Cody Pennington would depart Marseyside this summer.
