West Brom ‘devastated’ after former midfielder dies aged 25

The former Albion youngster died after collapsing during a friendly in Portugal.

West Brom have said they are “devastated” following the death of former midfielder Quevin Castro.

Castro, 25, collapsed during a friendly in Portugal on Saturday morning.

The Portuguese-English midfielder was playing for Real Sport Clube, known locally as Real Massama, against Estrela da Amadora when he became unconscious during the opening minutes of the match.

A defibrillator was used in an attempt to save his life after medical teams from both clubs rushed onto the pitch to help him.

Emergency services were called to the scene, with paramedics continuing efforts to resuscitate Castro before he was later pronounced dead, aged 25.

West Brom have paid tribute to Castro, who was born in Portugal but moved to England in 2017 at the age of 16. The club said it was “devastated” by his passing.

Castro joined the Baggies as a teenager in 2021. He made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal.

Castro scored in a Premier League Cup final triumph over local rivals Wolves before going on to have loan spells at Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead. He departed The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.

After leaving Albion, he spent time at York City, King’s Lynn Town, Chippenham Town, Cambridge City and Eastbourne Borough before returning to his native Portugal.

Albion will pay tribute to their former youth player tomorrow, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of their Championship clash against Burnley. James Morrison’s side will also wear black armbands.

West Brom’s statement added:“The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time.”
