A 39-time Wales international is taking his first steps in to football management.

Former Birmingham City midfielder Robbie Savage has landed his first permanent job in football management.

The 49-year-old has been named as the new first-team manager of non-league Macclesfield. He was the Director of Football at Moss Rose but has now taken the main job after Michael Clegg’s departure was announced.

Savage managed the team on an interim basis in October, winning two games. According to Macclesfield, Savage was offered a role at a different club but chose to stay put and now the club have decided to name him head coach.

The 39-time Wales international will be supported by former Aston Villa, Birmingham City and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey who has been given a ‘position-specific role’. A first-team coach will also be named in due course but in the meantime Peter Brand has returned to the club.

Savage is inheriting a squad that finished second in the Northern Premier League Premier Division last season but lost in the play-offs. Macclesfield’s placing in the English pyramid system is in the seventh tier and they are hopeful of getting to the National League after the previous club folded. Savage has been a driving force in the clubs promotion through the various divisions and is now well positioned to take the Silkmen forward.
