Another midfielder has appeared on the transfer radar of Birmingham City.

Birmingham City are interested in signing out-of-contract Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell, according to a report.

Phil Cadden, a journalist that covers the Welsh national team for The Sun is reporting that Blues along with QPR and Wrexham are chasing the Welshman's signature. He looks set to leave Fratton Park this summer with Pompey deciding against activating a one-year extension in his contract.

Our friends at The News say Morrell's future on the South Coast is 'unclear'. Pompey want Morrell to stay with them with talks being held but they are fully aware of the risk of losing him for free if a deal can not be struck in the next few weeks.

He will officially become a free agent on June 30 and with his contract deadline shortly approaching, he is free to speak to other clubs. Morrell is currently rehabilitating at Pompey’s training ground as he recovers from a knee injury that has kept him out of action since February.

The 27-year-old has an abundance of experience in League One having played 121 times in the division. He featured 27 times for Pompey this season as they won the league title. Morrell has also played for Cheltenham Town, Lincoln City and Luton Town after beginning his career at Bristol City.

Morrell has been capped 37 times for Wales with two of those coming at the 2022 World Cup and is an international teammate of Blues star Jordan James. James, wanted for transfer by a handful of Premier League clubs, took Morrell's space in the Wales starting line-up after the midfielder picked up a suspension, and Morrell has since struggled to get back in to the first-team picture.
