Birmingham City captain Dion Sanderson has issued a statement apologising to fans and responding to speculation around his future.

The central defender has alleviated concerns over a potential departure with a lengthy message to supporters, committing his future to Birmingham despite the club’s recent relegation to League One.

It was a disastrous season in the Championship to drop down to the English third tier for the first time in nearly three decades but it hasn’t put off Sanderson. The skipper wants to help Blues bounce back at the first given opportunity.

Not only that, but Sanderson wants to make up for his own mishaps – including an off-the-field matter that caused great controversy. The 24-year-old appeared in court on a drink driving charge after an incident in the aftermath of Birmingham’s 3-0 win over Coventry City. It’s now time to put things right.

Posting to Instagram, Sanderson said: “Hello Bluenoses, I haven’t been on social media for some time now. I felt it was important for me to take a step back and reflect on these past few months. It’s been tough to deal with as a player, a captain and as a person.

“I want to apologise to you all for the mistakes I’ve made both on and off the pitch. Birmingham City is my home. It’s a privilege to represent this football club and to feel the love and support of the fans, from the moment I arrive at the stadium to the minute I step off the pitch.

“I’m eager for the season to start and I’m looking forward to getting back to work with much more focus, hard work and resilience. I have no doubt that we’ll overcome this setback together and get the club moving back in the right direction again.

“Hope to see you all very soon and most importantly, thank you. Your support has been incredible. KRO,” Sanderson said.
