Aston Villa want deal done 'this week' as Unai Emery green lights marquee signing

Aston Villa are working incessantly as Unai Emery hopes to secure the signing of a Premier League player by the end of this week.

The Villans are moving closer to pulling off an ambitious swoop for Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, with a fee agreed and contacts well underway with the player.

Currently out in Germany representing Netherlands at the UEFA European Championships, Maatsen is keen to gain sureties over his future as soon as possible. The 22-year-old, who spent the second half of the season just gone on loan at Borussia Dortmund, could get his wish.

Fabrizio Romano reports Villa are pushing hard to complete the signing of Maatsen “this week” after agreeing a £37.5 million fee with Chelsea. It’s a deal that will inflict a sizeable dent into Villa’s transfer budget - especially given the current struggles with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations - but it’s one Unai Emery wants to secure.

Negotiations with Maatsen are now advanced and it’s hoped an agreement can be reached on personal terms in the next 24 hours or so. Once that’s sorted, Villa will likely send representatives to the Netherlands’ training base so the defender can undergo a medical and sign his contract – expected to be a six-year term.

Jhon Duran deal separate to Ian Maatsen move

Although Villa and Chelsea have also discussed a move for Jhon Duran in the other direction, it’s assured that would be an entirely different transaction rather than a swap deal. The Blues are also believed to be looking at other striker targets, including Atletico Madrid star Samu Omorodion.

Maatsen, who recently reached the UEFA Champions League final with Dortmund, could become Villa’s first announced transfer of the summer window. This is despite the Villans already reaching a full agreement to sign Ross Barkley from Luton Town for around £5 million. The chaotic nature of the window is expected to continue for several weeks.
