Watch: Crowds join the Birmingham Remembrance Sunday Parade 2022 on Colmore Row in the city centre

We meet the people of Birmingham join the Remembrance Sunday Parade on Colmore Row in Birmingham city centre

This Sunday saw the nation come together to remember the Armed Forces and their families from across Britain and the Commonwealth who lost their lives as a result of conflict. An opportunity for people to come together to remember those sacrifices in the defence of our freedoms and way of life.

Here in Birmingham people gathered on Colmore Row, just outside of St Phillips Cathedral, to witness the ceremony compèred by Lawrence Barton, where hundreds of servicemen and women came together, marching in a parade alongside performances by The Birmingham City Council choir and the Salvation Army band.

Those in attendance unified in prayer and sang hymns in reverence to those fallen during wartime, laying down wreaths to commemorate their sacrifice. Two minutes of silence was held in honour of those who paid such a heavy price to ensure our way of life. Those who attended came from a manner of different backgrounds - all with different stories to tell - but were unified in a shared desire to pay respects to those who sadly died in service to their country.

Steven says: “Well I came out as I’ve been a member of the armed forces for 35 years up to when I left. I’ve been out for seven years now. I enjoy coming. Unfortunately, I missed the actual march today, because the taxi turned up late! But yeah, we do it as a family. My parents and my grandparents were all ex-forces. So I believe it’s sort of important to keep up the tradition, as it was.”

Caroline says: “It’s important to remember all the people who gave their lives in the service of humanity, like the chaplain said. It doesn’t matter what religion, what colour, what creed, what country - people gave the lives in the service of humanity. And it’s important to remember them because the lucky ones are standing here. The unlucky ones never came back.”
