Members of the public helped detain a robbery suspect after the woman aged in her 70s was injured as her bag was snatched in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham.

The woman, aged in her 70s suffered a suspected broken hip after she was approached at the junction of Warstone Lane and Vyse Lane just after 11.20am on Monday (April 29). Passers-by intervened before officers quickly arrived at the scene. A 29-year-old man was promptly arrested on suspicion of robbery and was taken into custody for questioning.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We managed to recover the stolen bag and the woman has been taken to hospital with a suspected fractured hip. Tackling robbery is a priority for us and we launched Operation Ruby as part of our drive to catch suspects and reduce offences. We continue to have visible patrols in busy areas and, thanks to the brave actions of the public, we now have another suspect in custody.”
